The introduction and adoption of new ideas is a permanent concern for the research and agricultural development institutes in Southern countries. For this, the term ‘innovation’ has recently replaced ‘extension’ and its use has become widespread in francophone rural research. Is this a mere question of vocabulary or a truly new development concept? The reflections of a group of researchers in agronomy, economics, geography and sociology are described. The members of the group compare their analyses of agrarian dynamics with the innovation model. The authors use this concept as a ‘gateway’ for better understanding changes in agriculture and rural societies. Use of the notion of innovation makes it possible to put forward hypotheses in agrarian dynamics. Conversely, this field of research is part of the clarification of the innovation concept.
