This book recounts the fight for women’s suffrage in the United Kingdom and the United States during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It gives a panorama of a complex movement in which “the pen and the voice” were key weapons. The selection of texts lays bare the fervour of suffragists and suffragettes, the strength of their convictions as well as their creativity. Speeches, testimonies, articles, petitions, pamphlets and songs provide insight into suffragist thought and reveal its diversity. Texts and illustrations put women’s rhetorical and political strategies into perspective. Rediscovering these activists’ writings, understanding their context and apprehending their ideological challenges will throw light on women’s political, social and cultural history.
